To the Editor:
What does “and Providence Plantation” mean?
During the 17th century when Roger Williams came to this area, he decided what the area should be called, and he called it Rhode Island and Providence Plantation.
Plantation, in those days, was a synonym for settlement or colony. We need to move forward and just think that we are a part of a colony or settlement. Therefore, I for one believe that we should keep the wording of our state as is: Rhode Island and Providence Plantation.
This is unique, and that makes us stand out as the smallest state with the longest name.
Vote “No” on changing the name of the state.

Excellent insightful and historical article of Truth. There is absolutely no reason for getting rid of Plantation in the name of our state. Please people keep it in. It actually says how open to diversity we are.
