Future Chefs in spotlight at cooking contest

Student chefs hailing from schools all over Cranston showed off their cooking talents during last week’s annual Future Chefs Competition, sponsored by Sodexo Food Services.

Each student at the elementary level was offered the opportunity to enter a healthy sandwich recipe into the contest. Eleven finalists were chosen, and those selected prepared their sandwiches for an audience of judges, family and friends last Wednesday evening at George J. Peters Elementary School.

Each student was paired with Sodexo employees to help them prepare one display plate and 50 sample portions of their sandwich entry. The students looked the part, dressed in their Future Chefs aprons and chef’s hats as they prepared their samples and then watched with some anxious anticipation as the judges did their taste-testing.

Each student who participated received a certificate to go along with their hat and apron, and the top two winners received bicycles. The third-place winner received a skateboard. The first-place winner also received a gift certificate.

The winners of the contest were: Gabriella Cunha, a fourth-grader from Oaklawn School for her Terrific Tuna Taco; Anthony Nardolillo, a fourth-grader from Stone Hill School for his Ham it Up Wrap; and Lily Wall, a fifth-grader from Gladstone School for her Lily’s Crunchy Gobble Gobble sandwich.

The winning sandwich creations will be featured throughout the rest of the school year on the Sodexo school lunch menu.
