By ALEX SPONSELLER The fourth-seeded Gershkoff American Legion baseball team topped fifth-seeded Warwick Tree Post in two games last week to advance in the state playoffs.
Gershkoff, who went 1-1 against Warwick in the regular season, beat its neighboring rival by scores of 6-5 and 8-2 to earn a spot in the Final Four against top-seeded R&R Construction.
“We hit the ball well, that was really the key in both games. We played well defensively and got some ace pitching from both (Jason) Patalano and (Massimo) Feroce. That’s what happens when you have the three facets of the game working at once, that’s what happened there,” said Gershkoff manager Dave Schiappa. “Chris Torres had a two-run homer, Dave Marchetti hit a two-run homer, Joe Domenico was pretty much unstoppable at the plate, he hit almost every at bat. That was the key.”
Gershkoff fell to R&R 4-1 in the opening game of the Final Four at Cranston Stadium on Monday evening. The Final Four is a double-elimination format, so Gershkoff went on to face Upper Deck on Tuesday night to try to hold off elimination. The results were not available at press time.
Schiappa and company enjoyed competing against Warwick in the opening round and embraced the challenge of squaring off against Upper Deck once again in a championship rematch.
“It definitely helped (beating Warwick in two games). It has been historic with these teams, we always have had a rivalry with Warwick and Upper Deck so it always seems to be a triangle with us. Over the years we’ve always seemed to get up for those teams,” said Schiappa.
Managing the team’s pitching staff will be important in making a title run, according to Schiappa.
“The key will be if our pitching holds up,” Schiappa said. “We have four or five guys that we could go to, it’s going to be about whatever works. We have a lot of arms that all spot started for us.”
