Gordon School to Host 13th Annual Visiting Author Event

Posted by KyrieMcCormick

The Gordon School will host its 13th annual visiting author event December 3rd – December 5th. Monica Brown, author of Lola Levine and the Marisol McDonald books, is this year’s Karla Harry Visiting Author, and will present to each grade and lead workshops with Lower School and Middle School students.

Personality identity and activism are present throughout Brown’s work, a theme that runs through Gordon’s approach to education. Her stories are inspired by her Peruvian and Jewish heritage and she has teamed up with children to write and illustrate stories and picture books that bring awareness to the importance of diversity. Her latest picture book, Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos, was named a New York Times Best Illustrated Book of 2017 and 2018 Pura Belpré Honor for Illustration.

The Visiting Author Event also includes a book fair, which is free and open to the public. Jerry Craft, author of the Kirkus Prize-winning New Kid; Deborah Freedman, author of Carl and the Meaning of Life; and Jazzmin Iman, author of When Art is Loved, will be on-hand for signings each day.
