Guzman’s no-hitter lifts Bolts to win

Randy Guzman would toss his second no-hitter of the season to lead the Cranston East baseball team to a 10-0 win over Toll Gate in six innings on Monday afternoon at the Stadium.

The Central Connecticut-commit was dominant from start to finish, picking up 12 strikeouts and walking just one batter.

“It’s a great feeling. I feel accomplished and I want to keep going, keep winning. Anytime I can come out here and help my team win, I feel accomplished. We needed this win,” said Guzman. “Some days it is just there, and today it was there right away. I just wanted to attack the batters and come out with the win.”

The East bats wasted no time getting going as the Bolts would jump out to a big 9-0 lead through the first two innings. Damon Asencio led the way going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs. Carlos Merejo had a big performance as well, scoring two runs on two hits as well. The Toll Gate defense struggled in the loss, committing five errors in the field.

Getting the quick run support allowed Guzman to settle in and pitch with confidence.

“That gives me a ton of energy. We are a very talented team overall, but sometimes we struggle with the bats. Having the bats there today was excellent for us,” Guzman said.

After a shaky start to the spring season, the Bolts have turned things around as of late, getting back-to-back wins and improving to 8-5 to remain in the Division I playoff picture.

East coach Gary Bucci hopes that his club is getting ready to go on a big run and has been impressed with the senior season his standout ace is having.

“Randy’s becoming a very good pitcher. Throwing his breaking ball for strikes just adds another dimension to his game. These guys can play with anybody so hopefully they are finding their stride,” said Bucci. “I’m not sure if (the switch) has flipped all the way just yet, but it’s close. They’re recognizing that they can play with anybody, they’re close.”

Toll Gate’s Luca Barletta got the start for the Titans and would work for five innings and pick up three strikeouts. Andrew Agostinelli picked up a strikeout in relief.

Toll Gate would top rival Pilgrim 6-3 the previous game to avenge an early season defeat to the Pats. Zach DeCorpo led the way going 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI while Jeremie Luna also knocked in a run. Brayden Ogden and Barletta combined for five strikeouts on the mound.

Toll Gate fell to 3-9 in league play with the loss to the Bolts and the two teams will be playing their rematch on Thursday in Warwick.
