Police are investigating the city’s first homicide of 2020.
Officers responding to a reported shooting on Harris Avenue at approximately 4:06 a.m. Tuesday morning found Providence resident Jamal Vasquez, 24, dead as a result of an apparent gunshot wound, according to a Tuesday afternoon statement from Chief of Police Col. Michael Winquist.
The incident occurred near Harris Avenue’s intersection with Cranston Street, just a short distance from Cranston Police headquarters on Garfield Avenue.
According to Winquist’s statement, a motive for the killing has not been determined and no arrests have been made. Detectives had interviewed people who attended a house party on Harris Avenue that “occurred at the same time as the murder,” the chief’s statement reads.
“Detectives are also reviewing video surveillance camera footage from nearby businesses and houses to identify any suspects or witnesses that may be able to assist with the investigation,” Winquist’s statement reads.
Earlier Tuesday, Maj. Todd Patalano told the Herald that investigators were “working multiple leads” in the case. He said the shooting is not believed to have been random.
According to Winquist, police responding to the scene discovered a “stolen semi-automatic handgun” next to the body of the victim. The suspect or suspects in the slaying, according to the chief, “may have left the area in a dark-colored sedan last seen traveling south on Cranston Street.”
A heavy police presence remained at the scene through the morning, and some residents of the neighborhood and family members of the victim gathered around the area cordoned off by investigators.
“This homicide is the first murder in the City of Cranston in the past eighteen months,” Winquist’s statement reads. “We wish to offer our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Vasquez’s family. We will use all department resources to identify and arrest the person(s) responsible.”
Police are asking anyone with additional information to contact Detective Jon Nelson at 477-5150 or Detective Salvador Sanchez at 477- 5141. Tips may also be submitted anonymously via the department’s website, www.cranstonpoliceri.com.
