To the Editor:
This habitat is a recognition that the earth is one and an acknowledgement that it behooves us to work at maintaining a sustainable balance in nature. Like many of you readers, I am old enough to remember that gas stations used to have windshield cleaners available year-round, not just in winter, because it was not easy to get all the squished bugs of summer off a windshield without a sponge and squeegee. Unfortunately, today’s youth don’t know what I am talking about. That is because we have lost so much of the insect population to pesticides and habitat loss. To be honest, I cannot say I miss the mosquitoes and I would like to decimate the tick population, but the truth is these insects all play an important role in keeping nature (and us) in balance.
Edgewood Church is asking for help from those living in our community to keep our wildlife habitat fully functioning and in good shape. On Saturday morning, April 9, from 10 a.m. to noon, the church will host a clean-up party. Under the direction of Kathy Schnabel, we will be pulling weeds, splitting plants and doing a general clean-up. This is a great opportunity for all urban gardeners in the neighborhood to get together and get to know one another. Plus, the church’s Master Gardener is willing to answer any questions a volunteer might have about their garden or yard.
If you have questions about this clean-up, please contact the Edgewood Church office at 401-461-1344.
