May 17, Patriotic Concert sponsored by The St. Kevin, St. Rita, and St. Timothy Music Ministries, on Fri., May 17, at 7 p.m., at St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick, to celebrate Memorial Day. This concert will feature combined church choirs, soloists, and special guest, the Ocean State Pops Orchestra. The ensemble will perform patriotic and inspirational music, some of which will be accompanied by the combined choirs. This event is a tribute to military, police, fire and first responders, and especially to active and retired veterans. The concert will open with a presentation of colors by the Warwick Police and Fire Honor Guard and the singing of the National Anthem, followed by patriotic choral music and the spectacular sound of a full orchestra and chorus. This is a free concert open to the public.
May 17, It Takes a Village 5K and 1K Fun Run Annual Fundraiser will be hosted by The E.S. Rhodes Elementary PTA with a live music celebration on Fri., May 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pawtuxet Village Park, 2 E. View Street, for an evening of food, fun, and music! This fundraiser allows support to host family events, coordinate after school enrichment programs, sponsor culturally-enhancing field trips and assembly events, and much more! Festivities kick off starting with live music from student and parents’ bands from You Rock School of Music. The Johnston Historical Society will host their next guest speaker, Ruth Strach, owner of the At Last! Studio, who will discuss bookbinding and book conservation. Founded in 1993, the At Last! Studio is a small, fully equipped hand-bindery located in Scituate. Combining techniques which are centuries old with the best “up-to-date” binding and conservation practices, Ruth strives to ensure that the books she binds, conserves, restores, and/or preserves will continue to be used and enjoyed for many years. It is hoped that attendees will learn some handy tips for taking care of their own books, as well as gain an understanding of what items are worth preserving. June 12, NAMI-RI: Registration open for Family-to Family Course The Rhode Island chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-RI) is now accepting registration for our June/July session of NAMI’s Family-to-Family course which begins Wed., June 12. Course is on Wednesdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. This is a free and virtual, 8-session educational program for family, significant others and friends of people with mental health conditions. It is a designated evidence-based program, which means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition. NAMI-Rhode Island's Family-to-Family course is taught by trained family members who have lived experience with a loved one, and includes presentations, discussions and interactive exercises. Humans of Cranston is back for a second year after a successful first season, and is now accepting nominations! Over the last year, the project featured 19 resident stories in a Herald column, on OneCranston HEZ social media, and in a final book with the goal of showcasing and celebrating residents' community involvement, diversity, and unique life perspectives. NAMI-RI Offers Family Support Groups The RI chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-RI) offers free support groups for families and friends of loved ones who are struggling with their mental health. The groups are led by trained facilitators who also have lived experience as family members themselves. The group meetings last about 1.5 hours, and everyone who participates in the meeting gets a chance to share. The other members of the group try to offer help and resources, when appropriate, based on their own experiences.
