The "Blessings in a Backpack" team at Mount St. Rita Health Centre has been chosen as the recipient of Hope Highlands Elementary School’s Backpack Drive last week during Make Your Mark Week. “Blessings in a Backpack’s” mission is designed to feed elementary school children whose families qualify for the federally funded free or reduced price meal program and have little or no food on the weekends. A local chapter in Rhode Island has just been formed out of Mount St. Rita’s in Woonsocket. Each week they fill backpacks with food and then deliver the food to the families in need. Pictured from left are Sister Stella Zarlenga, RSM from “Blessings in a Backpack;” Lucy Kirshenbaum; Brenna Whittaker; Tessa Phillips; Elizabeth Reis from “Blessings in a Backpack;” Donna Hart from the Hope Highlands’ PTO Sunshine Committee; Noah Ialongo; and Devyn Cunha. Altogether, the students donated 41 backpacks and 10 lunchboxes. (Herald photo by Steve Popiel)
