Competitive pay. Flexible schedules. Amazing benefits.
Those are the lead words Internet giant Amazon used on its flyer advertising Tuesday’s job fair at its soon-to-open fulfillment center on Hartford Avenue.
Film footage on local television stations, including WPRI and WJAR, showed that the event was well attended, with a line of potential applicants queued up around the behemoth building.
“I am pleased to see the hundreds of people who turned out for Amazon’s job fair on Tuesday,” Johnston Mayor Joseph Polisena Jr. said Wednesday morning. “Our platform in Johnston of robust economic development provides good paying jobs and helps those individuals seeking them address the affordability burden that so many of us face."
The job fair was one more important step forward as the center — which Amazon officials have said will employ approximately 1,500 people — prepares to open.
Last month, the Town Council granted Amazon its business license and at that time, the company said it plans on having the facility open by the holiday season.
“We consider Tuesday’s job fair to have been very successful and appreciate the opportunity to have met with several hundred interested candidates…,” said Jonathan Greeley, senior manager of economic development for Amazon. “As a result, scheduled pre-hire appointments with candidates are already underway. We appreciate the support of the mayor and our community partners in helping build local awareness around job opportunities for Amazon in Johnston.”
Greeley added that the company is “not done yet” and that hiring for the large facility will continue. He said Amazon will be posting new shifts weekly through the end of the year and into 2025, and encouraged interested applicants to visit amazon.com/applynow or text JOBEVENT to 31432 to create a profile and receive notifications.
In July, the company opened the unfinished facility to give a tour to the media and some key officials, including Gov. Dan McKee.
They described the Johnston site as a “fulfillment center” which will also provide warehouse space. At the time, Jonathan Greeley, Amazon’s economic development manager for New England, provided some “fun facts” about the building, noting that it is 3.8 million square feet, which just shy of about 66 football fields.
He also said that more concrete was poured at the Hartford Avenue site than for the building of the Empire State Building.
In past comments, Amazon spokesman Mike Murphy has said that recruiting and online hiring efforts remain ongoing, and open positions are posted on a rolling basis. Interested applicants can visit amazon.com/localjobs or text NEWJOB to 31432 to sign up for job alerts, he said.
