Invective is cheap, change is expensive

To the Editor:

“The recent racist Tweet by Rep. Patricia Morgan has brought international mockery to her and significant local outrage. The details are available to anyone interested. Pillorying Rep. Morgan is as simple as it is ineffective.

Rep. Morgan is unlikely and maybe incapable of change. Her racism may be instructive on the notion of critical race theory. Critical race theory is a useful and often necessary perspective for understanding how the racist foundations of what has become the US persist over time. Racism is a shape-shifter, slavery morphs to Jim Crow, lynchings molt into ‘law and order’ and segregation spawns suburbs.

Vilifying Rep. Morgan generates a lovely veneer of schadenfreude, yet wastes energy and time. Rep. Morgan, many in her generation and their ilk, draw on systemic racism, the tenaciously viscous pollutant that has seeped into virtually all institutions. The real deep cleaning, the real Reconstruction will only come from putting time and treasure directly into people and organizations working to decontaminate our institutions.

Invective is cheap. Change is expensive. Lil’ Rhody fortunately has a trove of social justice groups that work everyday to marginalize hate, promote diversity and rise up to meet the challenges of racists, elected or not.

They deserve your support. And your dollars.

Give them and yourselves that gift.”
