Here are some of the highlights from 20 years ago (2002) and 40 years ago (1982).

20 Years Ago

The 9th annual Boat Show was at the Providence Convention Center. Tickets were $10.

“A Beautiful Mind, starring Russell Crowe was the first 5-star movie of the year. “The Shipping News,” based on E. Annie Proulx’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, starring Kevin Spacey, was the sleeper of the year. “Black Hawk Down” was one of the best war movies ever made.

Three stalwarts of Gamm, formerly Alias Stage theatre, Nigel Gore, Kate Lohman and Eric Tucker left to form Beowulf Theatre in Pawtucket. It didn’t last too long.

The Hatfield McCoy Trio performed at the Providence Atheneum.

“Annie” opened at the Theater Company of Rhode Island in Harrisville.

The eclectic take-out spot, Morgan’s Fancy in Edgewood closed its doors.

40 Years Ago

Lou Grant and Hill Street Blues were favorite TV shows.

“Mornings at Seven” was at the Ocean State Theatre (now PPAC), while ”A Lesson From Aloes” was at Trinity, starring Richard Kavanaugh.

The Ice Capades the Vienna Choir Boys and the Boston Symphony Orchestra came to Providence.

Governor Francis had a daily luncheon special of soup, sandwich and French fries for $1.95.

Barker Playhouse presented “The Sunshine Boys.”

Rod Stewart was at the Civic Center. Tickets were $10.50 to $12.50.

Baccacio’s in Cranston had a prime rib dinner for $8.95. The Red Coach Grill in Warwick ad a variety of steak and scallop dinners for $6.95.

IHOP had fish and chips for $2.95. Rumplestiltskins in Warwick had a fried chicken dinner for $2.95.

Former RI Junior Miss, Debbie DiBiase of Cranston, was a member of the cast of “Sugar Babies” touring at the Ocean State Theatre.
