John R. Fitzpatrick, age 80 of Warwick, passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI. The son of the late Thomas and Veronica (Crawford) Fitzpatrick, he was born in Providence, RI. He was the beloved husband of M. Lynne (Bartlett) Fitzpatrick for 58 years. John graduated from LaSalle Academy in 1959 and then received his Bachelor’s Degree from Providence College in 1963. Following his graduation, he served in the U.S. Army, reaching the rank of Captain before receiving an honorable discharge. For his meritorious service, he received the Army Commendation Medal. For over 20 years, John was employed by Gulton Industries as the CFO. He was a star running back on the LaSalle football team and as an adult played softball and tennis and skied. He grilled a mean steak and often treated himself to one at Twin Oaks. In retirement he put his sharp financial mind to work for others, spending 12 years as a volunteer tax preparer with AARP. At home, he always had a game on, an avid fan especially of the Red Sox and Patriots. He took an active part in his younger grandchildren’s lives, with video chats, chess games (via computer during the pandemic), and trips to see their games and performances or attend their birthday parties. In addition to his wife, John is survived by his two children—John S. Fitzpatrick and his wife Sandra of New Haven, CT, and Sharon L. Bannister and her husband Joseph of Warwick, RI. He was the grandfather of Lisa Bannister McAlman, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Alison Fitzpatrick; the great-grandfather of Bruce and Miles McAlman; and the brother-in-law of June Fitzpatrick. He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Fitzpatrick, and his sister, Margaret Kelleher. Visitation was held on Monday, December 13, from 4:00 - 6:00 PM at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick, RI.  A Mass of Christian Burial was on Tuesday, December 14, at 11:00 am at Saints Rose & Clement Church, 111 Long Street, Warwick, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations in the memory of John R. Fitzpatrick may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 931 Jefferson Boulevard, Suite 3004, Warwick, RI 02886-2213, http://www.cancer.org.
