DRIVING WITH SUSPENDED LICENSE
On May 29 at approximately 6:22 p.m. during a fixed post on Killingly Street, Officer Matthew Murphy observed a maroon Honda Accord traveling northbound on Killingly Street. The vehicle appeared to be driving to the right of the white line, and Officer Murphy noticed an illegible inspection sticker as well as a nonfunctional brake light. After conducting a motor vehicle stop, he made contact with the vehicle’s operator, who claimed that he had left his license at home. Officer Murphy detected a strong odor of marijuana, and observed a rolled blunt wrap by the vehicle’s center cup holders. A field sobriety test revealed no significant signs of impairment.
The vehicle operator provided a name upon request, but after running checks Officer Murphy could not match the given name’s driver’s license photograph to the operator. He eventually matched the operator to another license photo that had the same last name provided but a different first name. The operator acknowledged that he had lied about his name due to having a suspended license, at which time he confirmed his real name. He was charged with Driving With a Suspended License - 4th+ offense, as well as Obstructing an Officer in Execution of Duty. He additionally received a summons for No Inspection Sticker, Stop Lamps Required and Laned Roadway Violation.

Officer Morales clocked the vehicle as traveling at a rate of 57 mph in a posted 30 mph zone, at which point he attempted to pull the vehicle over. The vehicle operator continued to drive at a high rate of speed, overtaking another vehicle from the left lane without using a left blinker when there was oncoming traffic. After Officer Morales followed with his cruiser’s overhead lights and sirens activated, the grey sedan eventually came to a stop.
The driver appeared to be in an emotional state, uttering expletives and saying “I was so close to being home,” among other statements. He claimed he was returning from work in East Greenwich. The driver was charged with Reckless Driving, additionally receiving summons for Speeding 11+ mph 3rd offense, Overtaking on Left and Turn Signal Required.
