Lady Pats advance to DI semis

The Pilgrim softball team cruised past North Providence 8-3 in the Division I Quarterfinals and beat Cumberland 11-3 in the Final Four first round.

The momentum was cut short by Coventry in the Division I Semifinals, as the Oakers would earn the 3-0 shutout win to punch their ticket to this weekend’s state championship.

This would be Pilgrim’s first loss of the double elimination tournament and set the Lady Pats up with a matchup against St. Raphael Academy on Wednesday evening, with the winner heading to RIC to join Coventry.

Pilgrim jumped out to a big 6-1 lead against North Providence in the first inning and would hold the Cougars without another score until the final inning of play. Alyssa Twomey led Pilgrim at the plate with a three-run homer in the first inning. Lily Brown went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI while Madison Wrench, Sophia Chevian and Destinee Santiago all knocked in runs.

Twomey pitched the complete game for Pilgrim and struck out 11 batters while allowing just one earned run.

Twomey continued to swing a hot bat for Pilgrim against Cumberland as she went 3- for-3 and drove in five runs. Brown and Madi D’Amato also chipped in a pair of RBI each. Twomey got the win in the circle, striking out nine batters while allowing just two earned runs.

The Oakers and Pats engaged in a pitching duel in the semis, but the Oakers’ would get the better of the matchup and hold Pilgrim to just one hit. Twomey gave up just four hits, but that would be enough for the Oakers to score three earned runs and pick up the victory.

The Pats traveled to St. Ray’s on Wednesday night but the results were not available at press time. The two clubs met toward the end of the regular season, with the Saints earning the 4-3 victory
