Lindsay ready to lead West tennis after busy summer

Cranston West senior Geneva Lindsay had a busy summer to say the least.

Early in the season she entered her first beauty pageant when she competed in Miss Teen Rhode Island. The event was a success as she finished first runner-up.

“The passion was absolutely incredible and the girls that I competed against were amazing. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I’ve always loved watching beauty queens and that process and I always thought that it was an amazing organization. I wanted to do it for awhile. These pageants are just so empowering for women,” said Lindsay.

Along with the pageant, she continued to sing for the Immaculate Conception Church, where she has been volunteering for the past two years.

On top of singing, beauty pageants, preparing for her senior year, she has also managed to secure captainship and the top singles spot for the Falcons’ girls tennis team, whose regular season got underway this week.

Lindsay has been a lifelong tennis player and is excited to represent her team while going toe to toe against some of the other top players in the state.

“I am thrilled to go into the season as captain of this amazing team. Right now I am set at the No. 1 seat and my goal is to stay there and play some great matches against some other great girls from other teams. I am so proud to play a sport that is also so empowering for women. The US Open just celebrated 50 years of equal pay for women which is amazing,” said Lindsay.

Although tennis has been one of her many passions, her long-term focus will be on singing. She has begun searching for colleges with music programs and conservatories. Her career goals revolve around classical music as she hopes to sing opera in the future.

Lindsay has put a lot on her plate over the course of the past year and figures to be mightily involved in the community during her senior year. Many students would be overwhelmed with such a tight schedule, but Lindsay has embraced it and has already seen it pay dividends in her personal endeavors and development as a young adult.

“Singing comes first but tennis is a very close second. It’s a great way to relieve some stress and spend time with friends. Time management can be tough, but you need to make a schedule, be organized. It’s one hundred percent important,” said Lindsay. “If you don’t put yourself out there, no one is going to know who you are. Facing your fears head on helps you build connections, meet new people. I believe facing your fears and going straight at it is the best way. With the pageants, opening up is so much easier now. Trying new things is so important.”
