MartinezFROM STAFF REPORTS Sophomore catcher Alex Martinez (Cranston) doubled in the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Rhode Island College baseball team past Roger Williams, 5-4, at Pontarelli Field on Monday afternoon.

The Hawks took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by senior center fielder Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) and a two-run homer (1) by graduate second baseman Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.).

RIC got two runs back in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, senior shortstop Rommy Morel (Providence) hit a grounder to the left side that was botched and allowed sophomore designated hitter Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry) and Martinez to score.

RIC freshman starter Seth Daly (Riverside) settled down after the first frame and was masterful for the next 6.2 innings. He retired 14 Hawks in a row at one point before coming out in the eighth frame.

Sophomore left fielder Joey Coro (North Providence, R.I.) came on as a pinch runner in the seventh and scored on a Hawk error to tie the game, 3-3.

Roger Williams took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth on a Roth RBI fielder’s choice.

Freshman center fielder Cameron Santerre (Bristol) led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, stole second and scored on senior third baseman Ray Zincone’s (West Warwick) RBI single. Martinez followed with a perfectly placed flare down the right field line that RWU could not get to in time to throw out Zincone, who slid safely into home for the walk-off win.

Daly went 7 2/3 innings, allowing just four runs on five hits. Junior righty Shaun Gamelin (Riverside) picked up the win (1-0), striking out three in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

RWU junior starter Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) hurled 6 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and struck out five. Junior reliever Adam Harz (Manchester, Conn.) took the loss (0-1).

Zincone and Martinez each went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

Roth went 1-for-4 with a run scored, three RBI and a homer.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Anna Maria on Thursday, March 25 (3 p.m.).
