New Edgewood Village group provides support for older adults

Posted

There is a new organization forming in Edgewood with an important goal – helping older adult members to live full lives in their own homes and community.

Co-chair Sylvia Weber and other members of the newly formed board were on hand at the Edgewood Farmers Market last Saturday to promote Edgewood Village, a nonprofit mutual support organization dedicated to helping older adults maintain independence in their Edgewood home.

The Village Common of Rhode Island started on the East Side of Providence in 2014 and expanded to Barrington in 2020. The growing concept has now added Edgewood to its list, reaching out to educate and inform the community of their volunteer opportunities and member benefits.

Membership benefits may include rides provided by volunteers, assistance with errands, technology help with phones, tablets and computers, help with household chores and light maintenance, social and cultural events, classes and special interest groups.

Volunteer opportunities include drivers, tech support, errands, office help, home help, friendly calls, home visiting and event planning.

“Volunteers do not have to be members,” Weber said. “And members do not have to be volunteers. But the are encouraged to do so.”

Member fees run from $10 to $60 a month, depending on one’s personal situation, and are negotiable.
