Rhode Island all-around gymnastics champion Brooke Anderson had another huge performance at the New England Championships, once again taking first place in the bars event and capturing the all-around at the regional level. Anderson also placed third in the vault and fourth on the floor.

After winning the state title just a few weeks back, Anderson was unsure if she would make the trip to New Englands. Between a conflicting club schedule and not being sure of how she would finish in the rankings, Anderson entered the meet with her fingers crossed.

“I had two meets that day, the New England meet with my high school and another with my club, so I was stressing all week. I didn’t think I would even crack the top-10, I was hoping top-20. I hit a nice bar routine, I thought that bar routine was better than the one I did at states. Winning bars was great because bars has not always been my best event,” said Anderson.

The New England Championships were also divided between two groups, so to add to the suspense, Anderson did not know until later in the day that she was on track to win the all-around title.

“I didn’t know what the standings were for most of the time. There were two sessions and I knew that I was in first at the end of the first, but I figured that I would drop down during the second. I genuinely had no idea,” said Anderson.

Sure enough, the Rhode Island champion made her home state proud by taking the title on the big stage. The senior was thrilled to finish her high school career strong and to take home some hardware while representing Cranston West. She was also thankful for her experience at states, which helped her prepare for one final outing.

“That helped because I knew my scores at states. I knew where I made my mistakes, where I could improve and get better. I knew what I could go off of,” said Anderson. “It’s incredibly satisfying. I always wanted some sort of achievement in high school, so to get two of them is amazing. A regional one is crazy and a really big deal to me.”
