Not common sense to have gun range across from schools

Posted

To the Editor,

Last Monday I attended the City Hall meeting for the shooting range grievances. I did not speak before you [the council] because those who did said what I would have.

I have lived in the neighborhood for 71 years, so I am well aware of the situation. When I decided to write to the council, I certainly came up with a lot of thoughts on how to state a case against the range. But I know that it would be redundant as I’m sure you [the council] have heard it all. However, the one thing that I didn’t hear was this: it’s common sense not to have a gun range across the street from a middle school and a high school. Just as it’s common sense to have well trained police officers. Everyday my wife and I walk our dog to Western Hills middle school. One day this summer we encountered a young man exiting the school. He was from Massachusetts and was doing some work at the school. Gunfire was going off in rapid rounds. He was startled and asked if that was indeed gunfire. When we explained the situation he replied that it didn’t make sense to have a range in the earshot of schools. Actually no one seems to  believe it. But it’s there. Common sense tells us that it shouldn’t be.

I hope we can come up with a logical solution that won’t take years.

Why is this an issue after 50 years? Why not take the students across the street to the range to teach them firearms safety?

It's an issue after 50 years because the range went from a facility built for 40 Cranston police officers shooting pistols to 1000s of officers from across the state, the FBI, and anyone else with a check-in hand. They are shooting weapons of war across from schools in a civilian neighborhood. That is wrong in a civilized society.

In any given week there are 1000s to 10,000s bullets fired. To say it sounds like a war zone is not hyperbole.
