College Notes: Local freshman making noise

By BRENDEN SOARES It has been another season of struggle for the Rhode Island College women's soccer team, but Pilgrim alumna Gabrielle McGowan has given the Anchorwomen a boost despite the mounting losses.

The freshman midfielder wasted little time in vaulting herself into the lineup for RIC, starting all but two of the team's 12 matches to date, while also contributing to the Anchorwomen's attack.

McGowan has notched two goals and an assist, with the first of her markers coming in the 78th minute of her collegiate debut on September 1, but her effort was unable to prevent a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Curry.

Three weeks to the day later, the former Patriot played a key role in helping RIC snap a 12-match losing streak that dated back to the 2019 season, placing her fingerprints on a pair of goals as the Anchorwomen sailed by Massachusetts Maritime with a 4-1 triumph.

After an own goal from the Buccaneers just three minutes into proceedings, McGowan doubled the RIC lead in the 10th by depositing the ball past Massachusetts Maritime goalkeeper Lindsy Durgin.

In the second half, the Buccaneers cut the lead in half in the 62nd via a long-range free kick from Julia Quindley, but the Anchorwomen re-established their two-goal advantage 14 minutes later as McGowan set up Alexandra Amore for her first of the fall.

The RIC eleven are currently 2-10 on the campaign, reaching double-digits on the L side of the ledger with a 5-1 defeat to UMass-Boston last Saturday, and will travel to Eastern Connecticut and Southern Maine this week in a pair of Little East match-ups. Hendricken product Dawson Reynolds has been taking his first strides as a member of the Bryant cross-country squad this fall, with the former Hawk starting to prove himself as a useful member of the Bulldog team.

Bryant has competed in three meets to date this fall, with Reynolds managing to notch a scoring finish in his first race, a 45th-place result in the season-opening Shawn Nassaney Invitational on September 11.

Two weeks later, at the Central Connecticut-hosted Ted Owens Invitational, the freshman was one of a half-dozen Bulldog competitors to place inside the top 40, achieving his highest finish thus far by crossing the line in 32nd position.

Reynolds was back in action this past Saturday at the NEICAAA Championships in Boston as part of a seven-strong Bryant contingent, and managed to sneak inside the top 100 with a 95th-place effort as the Bulldogs finished in 13th out of 24 teams.

It will be a short turnaround this week for the Bryant harriers, as they will be traveling to the Green Mountain State this Saturday to race in the Vermont Fall Foliage Invitational in Saint Albans.
