Oaklawn goes pink for breast cancer awareness

The need for fundraising and awareness for breast cancer never ends. And on Friday, Nov. 5, the entire school community at Oaklawn Elementary wore their pinkest pinks to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

“The $626 raised was a record. The fifth-graders worked really hard to come together and advocate for the cause,” said Theresa Vessella, fifth-grade teacher and event coordinator.

Vessella was impressed with and proud of the students.

“The whole school participates by dressing in pink – pink hair, wigs, etc. The students know this is very near and dear to my heart because my mother died of breast cancer,” she said.

This was the sixth year that the fifth grade has sponsored the event.

School Principal James Zanfini was pleased with the support given by the Oaklawn community.

“The entire school community, students and faculty, came together to express themselves in pink while supporting the treatment and ultimate eradication of breast cancer,” said Zanfini.
