Never in recent history has Narragansett Parkway looked so good for the Gaspee Days parade that steps off Saturday from the intersection of Spring Green at 10 a.m. The red, white and blue line follows a freshly paved road that was completed in three sections by the city, the state and Rhode Island Energy. Actually, the state portion of the job was completed under a city contract. The city will be reimbursed for the work. There’s more to making this year’s celebration, commemorating the 251 anniversary of the burning of the British ship. Events won’t end with the burning of the Gaspee Sunday afternoon in Pawtuxet Cove. As last Saturday’s windy and raw conditions forced cancelation of the symphony in the park followed by fireworks at Salter Grove, the events are now scheduled for Saturday, June 17. As Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi observed, not only will Gaspee Days be extended, but this is a Father’s Day gift. (Cranston Herald photo)
