Pause keeps school sports on hold

FROM STAFF REPORTS In light of Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo’s weekly COVID-19 briefing on Thursday afternoon, there were some notable developments regarding the Rhode Island Interscholastic League and the high school winter sports season.

On Thursday, Raimondo announced that the statewide pause would continue for another week, which will push the start of the season off an additional week.

The league and its member schools were hopeful to begin tryouts as early as next Monday, however, the date will be postponed until the following week at least. Considering the holiday the following week, it is unlikely that the season begins before the first of the year.

In other news regarding high school sports in the state, the Principals Committee on Athletics also met on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the future of the league and its sports.

In the meeting, the committee approved a plan to move competitive cheerleading from the winter to the expected third season, which will also include football, girls volleyball, and unified basketball. The hope is for the third season to take place in March and April shortly following the standard winter season.

Also, wrestling was approved to be moved to the fourth season which will include other traditional spring sports and will be played in May and June. That season is slated to include baseball, softball, lacrosse, outdoor track and field, boys volleyball and unified sports.

Be sure to visit next week’s edition of the Johnston Sun Rise for any additional information regarding the winter season.
