Two vehicles that were racing on Broad Street in Edgewood on Monday night struck a pedestrian and another vehicle, according to police, and the two operators are facing charges.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:43 p.m. in the area of Broad Street and Berwick Lane. The operators of the two vehicles – identified as 19-year-old Jacob Gardner of Warwick and 30-year-old George Rodriguez of Providence – are believed to have been racing at the time of the incident.

According to a Tuesday statement from Chief of Police Col. Michael Winquist, a preliminary investigation found a 2001 Nissan Frontier pickup truck operated by Gardner and a 2002 BMW M5 operated by Rodriguez were traveling south on Broad Street at the time of the crash.

Gardner, according to the chief, attempted to pass the vehicle driven by Rodriguez, which contained one passenger. Rodriguez is said to have accelerated in an attempted to prevent Gardner from passing him, and “both vehicles continued to travel south, side by side, and at a high rate of speed with Mr. Gardner operating southbound in the northbound lane.”

As the vehicles approached a slight curve in the road, according to Winquist, Rodriguez’s vehicle struck a third vehicle, causing him to lose control, strike the curb and roll over. In the process, his vehicle struck a 37-year-old Smithfield woman who had been walking northbound.

“After hitting the pedestrian, Mr. Gardner’s vehicle came to rest in the yard of a residence on Sefton Drive after striking a pickup parked on the property,” according to Winquist. “The impact caused several tools and landscaping equipment in the bed of the truck to be ejected into the air, coming down on the hood and roof of the third vehicle.”

The Smithfield woman was hospitalized with serious injuries, the chief’s statement reads, and she was listed in serious but stable condition as of Tuesday morning.

Gardner and the operator of the third vehicle were both hospitalized with minor injuries before being released after treatment.

Gardner and Rodriguez have each been charged with driving to endanger resulting in person injury and reckless driving/drag racing. Both were held overnight and arraigned Tuesday in Third Division District Court, at which point their bail was set at $5,000 bond with surety. They are both scheduled to appear for a pre-arraignment conference on Dec. 14. Each also faces multiple traffic citations.

Rodriguez was additionally ordered held as a Superior Court violator in an unrelated case, according to Winquist.
