Senior takes gold in long jump, is Herald’s Athlete of the Week

Posted

The Cranston West girls indoor track and field team had a strong outing at last weekend’s state championships and was led by senior Quiana Pezza, who took home first place in the long jump with a mark of 18.10.

Pezza has been a key contributor for the Falcons throughout her career and won a state title as a member of a championship relay group. This was her first individual title and she was excited to get the job done on her last go-around in high school.

“I was very excited, I was (confident) but then (Sierra Thompson) threw her 18.9 and I got really nervous. After that I thought, ‘I put a lot of training in so I might as well just go for the win,’” said Pezza.

She actually misheard her mark being announced and thought she had missed out on gold. “I thought they said 18.7, so I thought, ‘shoot, it is what it is.’ But it was an 18.10,” Pezza joked.

After registering multiple top-three finishes in both running and jumping events in the past few seasons, Pezza was determined to reach the top of the podium.

“It was nice because last year I got second. I was upset because I worked hard for it so I made it my goal my senior year to win long jump. I was excited to make it happen,” Pezza said. “I always thought to have my own win would be so nice. I would fall short and be second, be third. I wanted this to be the year.”

Here are some results from the day:

GIRLS

Ailani Sutherland took third place in 55 dash for the Falcons and then took fourth in the 300 dash, while teammate Reece Vitale took fifth in the 55 hurdles.

Alison Pankowicz won the 1,000 run for Toll Gate while Pilgrim’s Keaney Bayha finished second in the 1,500 run.

Toll Gate thrower Vanessa Jones placed fourth in the weight throw. Bayha took fourth in the 1,000 run and fifth in the 600 run.

BOYS

Alonso Parker-Sharpe placed second in the 55 dash as well as the 300 dash for West.
