Philharmonic fills a music void

While most arts organizations are planning for openings in the fall, the Rhode Island Philharmonic has been offering its loyal supporters live and online concerts through the pandemic.

Last Saturday’s Mahler concert was a unique experience, as conductor Bramwell Tovey reduced the orchestra size to an even dozen, including two percussionists, a pianist strings, a flutist and a harmoniumist.

Soprano Laquita Mitchell brought the Symphony No. 4 in G major to a rousing conclusion with her compelling voice.

The orchestra returns to the Vets stage this Saturday, May 22, at 5 and 8 p.m. for a special Orchestra Showcase, which will be open to a larger audience thanks to the easing of pandemic restrictions. The 8 p.m. concert will also be livestreamed.

Russian-American composer Lidiya Yankovskaya will be at the podium.

Harpist Hyunjung Choi, principal trumpet Joseph Damian Foley and English horn chair Jane Murray will be featured in works by Debussy, Copland, Mendelssohn and more.

The Philharmonic opens its 2021-2022 season on Saturday, Sept. 18, with Tovey conducting the orchestra in Brahms’s Symphony No. 4.

Season tickets are available by calling 248-7000 or emailing boxoffice@riphil.org.
