The OneCranston HEZ is holding a Winterfest and 'Speak-Out' on Jan. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Central Library Community Room! There will be snow globe making, crafts, and activities to share your experiences in Cranston. Refreshments will be provided. The OneCranston HEZ is holding their next Community Conversation on Jan. 23 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Central Library Community Room. OneCranston Health Equity Zone is putting together a community cookbook to showcase and celebrate Cranston residents’ family traditions and cultures. Submissions are open now through March 31. Edgewood Garden Club Meeting

Edgewood Garden Club will host an open meeting on Jan. 11 at the William Hall Library (1825 Broad St., Cranston). The program will feature What Cheer Flower Farm, a nonprofit that grows and gives away 100,000 flowers per year from reclaimed industrial land in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence.

The farm’s mission to donate blossoms to local food banks, hospices programs, senior centers and social services and shelter organizations will be illustrated in part by slides of colorful summer flowers grown on the farm’s 2.7 acres. It will be a visual feast for winter-weary eyes.

The meeting begins with social time at 6:30 p.m. and the program at 7 p.m. The public is welcomed. Light refreshments will be served. The Edgewood Garden Club is more than five dozen women and men promoting gardening education and civic beautification primarily in the Edgewood section of Cranston and Gaspee Plateau neighborhood of Warwick. Established in 1933, the upcoming year marks its 90th year of community improvement efforts.


West Bay Chorale Seeks Singers

West Bay Chorale will hold its spring 2023 season kickoff and registration meeting on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m., with registration starting at 6:30. The meeting will take place at St. Kevin Church, located at 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Current singers, as well as those interested in joining the Chorale, are invited to register and learn the details of the upcoming concert season. Information regarding COVID related rules will be shared. Artistic director Eric W. Van Dervort will lead us, and the chorale’s board of directors will process registrations and pass out music. All current singers and those interested in joining must be vaccinated and boosted as recommended and everyone must show proof of vaccination. Masks will either be required or recommended, depending on Covid trends. In particular, we are seeking Soprano and Tenor voices. Our concert, Earth and Sky, will be held May 7 and will feature Haydn’s The Heaven’s are Telling, Sisi Ni Moja, Yonda’ Come Day, For the Beauty of the Earth, as well as a new arrangement of Morning Has Broken. New Lecture Series

The 1916 committee will present a Zoom lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 6 where Eoghan MacCormaic will speak to a Rhode Island audience from Galway. MacCormaic has long been involved with the struggle for Irish freedom and spent 15 years in Crumlin Road jail and in the H blocks between 1976 and 1991. He was part of the blanket protest and saw 10 of his comrades die during the Hunger Strike in the spring of 1981.

MacCormaic has since written two books describing the protest years and prisoners he shared time with. This event will take place at the RI Irish Ceilidhe Club, 50 America St., Cranston. The downstairs pub will be open at 6 p.m. for food and drinks. The event is open to the public.


Explore the ‘Woony’

The Explore the Woonasquatucket Recreation Series is made possible with support from REI Co-op.Pre-registration is required for the hikes. Upcoming hikes include the Stillwater Scenic Trail at 10 a.m., Jan. 7. This roughly two-mile round trip walk will follow along sections of the Woonasquatucket, including Stillwater Pond. You’ll see some of the buildings remaining from Stillwater Village, some remnants of the railroad spur that served the mill complex, and pass by dams that created these ponds – reminders of RI’s thriving industrial past. On Jan. 21, hike Olivia’s Forest Hike at 10 a.m. This is a short, 0.7 mile hike, but it is delightful and has some tricky spots to traverse. Citizenship Registration at William Hall Library

Based at Providence Public Library, Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative (RIFLI) is a free, nationally recognized ESL, citizenship preparation, workforce development and family literacy program for adults based at public libraries throughout Rhode Island.

RIFLI offers English as a Second Language (ESL), citizenship preparation and computer instruction as well as children’s programming, student resource support and links to library resources and services. Classes are free.

Teen Team at Central

Join Central library on Jan. 9 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. for teen team. This group meets on the third Monday of the month through May. (If there is a Monday holiday, they meet on the second Monday). Members help plan library programs and discuss community issues. Members receive one hour of community service for each meeting attended. Registration is required. Faith Chapel’s Youth Group

Faith Chapel (located at 43 Scituate Ave., Cranston) holds a weekly youth group for teens ages 14 through 18 on Monday nights at 6 p.m. There will be games, snacks, fellowship and fun.


Bain Middle School Presents Moana Jr.

Hugh B. Bain Middle School will present Moana Jr. at 7 p.m. on Jan. 13 and at 2 p.m. on Jan. 14. Tickets are $5 and you can email kkarikas@cpsed.net to reserve your seats.


Introduction to Microsoft Excel

Join Cranston’s Central Library from 10 a.m.to 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 14 to learn about basic spreadsheets, charts and formulas on Microsoft Excel. Basic computer skills are necessary for this class. Registration is not required.


Dungeons and Dragons

Join OneCranston Health Equity Zone on Jan. 14 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for Dungeon and Dragons at the Huddle Center (70 Gansett Ave., Cranston). The games will take place on the second Saturday of every month. There will be one room for youth and one room for their guardians. Guardians are required to stay if their youth is participating. However, they are also welcome to join the youth. Ages 10 and older are welcome.


Free Movie Night

The Gamm Theatre (1245 Jefferson Blvd., Warwick) is hosting free movie nights where individuals can enjoy their favorite films in stadium theatre seating. The theatre will show “The Prestige” at 7 p.m. on Jan. 16. Drinks and snacks will be available to purchase at concessions. No tickets necessary.


Hearing Loss and Dementia Presentation

Join the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center (1070 Cranston St., Cranston) at 1 p.m. on Jan. 18 for a program on hearing loss and dementia. Is there a connection between memory loss and hearing loss? Could hearing loss be making you forgetful or are we looking at the beginnings of dementia? Many studies have found an association between untreated hearing loss and dementia. What can be done now? Community Barn Dance

Warwick Center for the Arts (WCFA) is offering a community barn dance in its gallery on Jan. 21 from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The event will feature live folk music, a caller and contra and square dancing. At 7:15 p.m. there will be an opening session/beginners dance lesson. No experience is necessary. Individuals should wear comfortable clothes and non-street shores. Yoga in the Gallery

Join Warwick Center of the Arts (WCFA) every Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for an all-level yoga experience. You will learn to stretch and strengthen your body with breath and movement. PrepareRI Internship Program

The 2023 applications are now open for the PrepareRI High School Summer Internship Program. If you are, or have, a rising senior this summer, this paid opportunity is an excellent one for college or career resumes. Students attend a one week paid ($15/hr.) boot camp which prepares them for interviews and work-related skills as well as helps them to determine things like their strengths and weaknesses, and then are matched to a full-time, paid ($15/hr.), five-week summer internship that gives them hands-on, real world work experience in a possible career interest. Hundreds of students across RI participate in these internships and the application process is a multi-phased process including submitting essays, a resume, participating in an orientation and interviews. Join Phillips’ Chime Choir

Phillips Memorial Baptists Church (565 Pontiac Ave.) is looking for children ages six to 10 who are interested in participating in a Chime Choir led by Minister of Music Martha Sobaje. Call for Poetry Submissions

Notable Works Publication is working with Crosswinds Poetry on the third edition of “Voices of the Earth: The Future of Our Planet.” The theme is awakening a resolve for rediscovery, resolution, adaption, growth and a call for continued action. Poets accepted for the publication in this book will receive a complimentary copy upon completion. Three prizes will be awarded from entries. ($100 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.)
