Police standoff ends without injury after 9+ hours

Posted

At about 12:30 a.m. on Monday, city police officers responded to 52 Blake St. in Conimicut for a report of a domestic disturbance involving a firearm.

According to the police, an adult female resident of the home called 911 to report that her adult brother was “being belligerent” and had her firearm. Upon officers’ arrival, the caller and two other residents left the residence at officers’ request. The adult male, who was believed to be in possession of the firearm, refused to exit at the officers’ request. The male, later identified as 33-year-old resident Tyler Bagley, was known to police and is a person prohibited from possessing a firearm.

“From what I’ve been told, he has a felony on his record, so he would be a person prohibited from being anywhere near a firearm,” Police Chief Michael Lima said Tuesday. “It doesn’t necessarily need to be his firearm; this includes residing with someone with a firearm.”

The Warwick Police Department’s SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Teams were deployed to the scene. It was determined that Bagley had barricaded himself the attic of the home.

“There were four people in total in the house,” said Lima. “Originally, we were able to get two people out right away, and the third shortly thereafter.”

The incident resulted in the closing of Blake Street from West Shore Road at Bellman Avenue and a portion of Bellman Avenue. Police advised area residents to stay away as they would be using tear gas in an effort to flush out Bagley.

An adjoining neighbor who was trying to get her grandson to school told a Beacon reporter that she was awakened about midnight and spotted officers, their guns drawn, in the next yard.

Bagley continued to refuse to leave the home despite a lengthy dialogue between him and police via telephone. Pleas for him to leave the house could be heard in the neighborhood. After the dialogue and other methods failed to resolve the matter, police fired tear gas into the house and SWAT personnel entered at about 9:30 a.m. and took Bagley, who they said did have a firearm in his possession, into custody.

“It’s not easy being on scene that long,” said Lima. “Sometimes you have to let it play out.”

Bagley was taken into custody without incident and taken to Kent Hospital for evaluation. Lima said it was a “routine arrest once we were able to get inside.”

Bagley faces the following charges: Domestic Felony Assault, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Convicted of a Crime of Violence and Two Counts of Domestic Disorderly Conduct. He was held for arraignment. No one was injured during the incident.
