Shelter Animal of the Week

There is a saying that the third time is the charm. That’s what the shelter staff and the editors of the Cranston Animal Shelter’s PawPrint Press are hoping is the case for Milkshake. This chocolate-and-vanilla mini lop-eared rabbit has been relinquished to our shelter twice-once because a landlord refused pets, and a second time because his owners decided that they didn’t have time for him. Rabbits thrive in a home where they can get occasional time out of their hutches to roam in a safe place, stretching their legs and doing what rabbits do—hopping about. They should have spacious hutches, where they can stand on their hind legs. They are usually litter box trained, as is Milkshake, and their litter should be cleaned daily, along with fresh supplies of food and clean water. Spending time with your roaming rabbit keeps him social and people-friendly. Just think about reading your morning paper with a sniffing rabbit roaming at your feet! If this appeals to you, then you might consider bringing Milkshake home. Milkshake needs some time to adjust, as would be expected, considering his many upheavals in the last two years. He doesn’t enjoy being held but can be handled. He does not bite but does kick a little when being lifted. He has become friendlier as the shelter staff spends time with him. His adoption fee is $20 and he should be an only rabbit. Milkshake needs time and a place to call home. Mostly, he needs someone to love him.

The adoption fee for Milkshake is $20. This fee must be paid with a check or money order and includes all initial vaccinations, heartworm testing, and spaying/neutering. To insure we adopt all of our residents into responsible homes, we require adopters to provide proof of home ownership or a notarized letter of permission from their landlord. If you are hoping to adopt an animal but think that Milkshake may not be the right fit for your home, please look for the “Animal of the Week” article featured next week or pick up a copy of the PawPrint Press, our quarterly newsletter for the Cranston Animal Shelter featuring the animals available for adoption. We distribute it at local businesses and libraries in Cranston as well as at the shelter itself. You could also view the digital version of the PawPrint Press, by visiting the Cranston Police Department’s Facebook page or web page at www.cranstonpoliceri.com and clicking on the Animal Shelter and PawPrint Press tab. Also, please do not hesitate to visit or call the Cranston Animal Shelter to see if Milkshake is still available or if you have a question about any of our other animals. Please know that before an animal can be taken from his/her kennel, you must fill out our adoption application. These applications are completely non-binding and allow us to learn more about our potential adopters as well as shielding our residents from people who use the shelter as a petting zoo. The staff at the Cranston Animal Shelter is very dedicated to matching all of our animals to the right homes.

The Cranston Animal Shelter is located at 920 Phenix Ave. and can be reached at 401-464-8700. The Shelter is open from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
