Rasa: Indian cuisine at its finest

Restaurant Review by Don Fowler

My daughter lives in East Greenwich and she can tell you in detail about every restaurant on Main Street.

One of her favorites is Rasa, an intimate, guest-friendly Indian restaurant at 149 Main St., where she frequently orders takeout and meets friends for lunch and dinner.

While we have our favorites close to home, we drove “all the way to East Greenwich” to try Rasa.

We were warmly greeted, seated and presented with our menu.

The décor is as warm and friendly as the staff who hold conversations with regulars and first timers.

An older gentleman stopped the owner to tell him how nicely he was greeted over the phone. “That’s not always the case, you know,” he said.

I ordered the Lamb Curry ($21/$12 for lunch) and was very pleased with the tenderness of the meat, which I could cut with a fork. The sauce was loaded with small pieces of lamb and potatoes and enhanced with cardamom and star anise. Both are said to have medicinal values. A side of basmati rice enhanced the gravy.

Joyce chose the Biryani Shrimp ($22), a large dish containing eight good size shrimp, perfectly cooked in a mixture of onions, tomato, nuts, raisins, saffron and mint. She enjoyed half of it the next day, even giving me a shrimp.

Nan accompanied our meal. Can’t do Indian without Nan.

Rasa is open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. (10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Reservations recommended. Call 398-2822.
