To the Editor:
What has happened to Christopher Columbus?
In the 1960s, my teachers at Pontiac Elementary School understood the greatness of Columbus, the Admiral of the Ocean Sea. And they knew the importance of imparting that cultural heritage to their students. That is why the date 1492 is firmly fixed in school day memories.
But things have changed. Columbus has become controversial. In a cringe worthy concession to the ignorant mob, the current mayor of Providence ordered a statue of the great explorer be taken down.
Those who demonize Columbus demonize America. By rejecting his heroic achievements, they reject the promise of Western Civilization that his vision brought to the New World.
Columbus was not faultless. (What human being ever has been?) But he was a remarkably brave and courageous man.
Patriotic Americans should be brave, as he was brave, and dare to embrace our proud heritage. Let’s start by honoring Christopher Columbus, the Admiral of the Ocean Sea.
