Rhode Island Bakes for Breast Cancer announces call for submissions for sixth annual event

Rhode Island Bakes for Breast Cancer is seeking applications for its sixth annual event, which will help raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.

Bakeries, cafés, pastry shops and restaurants throughout Rhode Island will participate during this year’s fundraiser from Monday, Oct. 19, through Sunday, Oct. 25. Registration takes place at bakesforbreastcancer.org/registration and closes on Oct. 1. Since its inception in 1999, Bakes for Breast Cancer has raised over $2 million for breast cancer research and awareness, and hundreds of different bakeries, cafés, pastry shops and restaurants have participated.

By participating in the fundraiser, establishments will offer one designated dessert where 100 percent of the proceeds go towards the organization, benefiting breast cancer research. Proceeds raised in 2020 will support the research of Dr. Rachel Freedman. Dr. Freedman is a medical oncologist, specializing in breast cancer at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Her clinical trials primarily focus on treatment for older breast cancer patients, an area of research that has been vastly under subsidized.

“We are on a mission to end breast cancer for good, one sweet treat at a time,” said Bakes for Breast Cancer founder Carol Sneider. “We continue to grow each year, raise more money than the year before, and I’m completely in awe of the people who support the venues and our organization in a number of other ways. We’re pleased to have been able to evolve this year’s initiative into something that we think will work for all during this current time. Although we may have tough hurdles ahead due to the impact of COVID-19, we are dedicated to meeting our fundraising goals.”

This year, the Rhode Island Bakes for Breast Cancer is dedicated to honoree Donna Conforti, a breast cancer survivor of 20 years. Donna lived most of her life in Rhode Island and has been an active volunteer and fundraiser for breast cancer. Her commitment to finding a cure has been passed down to her sons, Paul and Raymond, who have been long-time participants of Bakes for Breast Cancer.

Already confirmed locations include Chapel Grille, Coast Guard Restaurant, Legal Sea Foods, Mill’s Tavern, Red Stripe Restaurant-Providence, and Seven Stars Bakery in Cranston, East Providence and Providence.

The Rhode Island Bakes for Breast Cancer and the Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer will run simultaneously on the same dates, successfully concluding the 2020 Bakes for Breast Cancer season.

Bakes for Breast Cancer, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Through dessert-oriented events, Bakes for Breast Cancer has created “sweet” ways to raise money for a disease that touches so many women and men. Funds raised help conduct basic and translational research, and clinical trials with the hope of eliminating all deaths from breast cancer, and, ultimately, eradicating the disease.
