To the Editor,
Rhode Islanders are not dumb! According to a recent article in the Providence Journal, those who are opposed to a state constitutional convention apparently think we are.
Rhode Islanders are smart enough to vote in favor of term limits, school choice and an inspector general while voting against restrictions on reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights.
Yet the forces that oppose a constitutional convention, primarily unions and a few left-leaning organizations, cry "the sky is falling, the sky is falling," apparently thinking that we, the voters, are too stupid to distinguish between amendments that are good for our state and those that would be ill-advised.
Nothing can come out of a state constitutional convention or any subsequent amendments that doesn't comport with the U.S. Constitution. Nothing can violate the Constitution's Bill of Rights.
Both sides in the constitutional convention question should trust the voters. That's what democracy is all about; letting the voters decide.
Give us the choice! Don't restrict our ability to participate in the democratic process by keeping a constitutional convention off the ballot.
