RI Manufacturers Association supports Speaker Mattiello

To the Editor:

As we prepare for the upcoming elections, I want to note the Rhode Island Manufacturing Association’s support for Representative Nicholas Mattiello, Speaker of the House, who serves District 15 in Cranston. Over the past few years, I have had the pleasure of working closely with the Speaker and his team on ways to help Rhode Island’s economy, job growth and supporting the manufacturing sector.

A few years ago, Governor Raimondo had the foresight to understand the need for a strong vocational training school in Rhode Island. She allocated $3.65 million to build the Center for Advanced Manufacturing at William M. Davies Career and Technical High School in Lincoln. Thanks to the leadership of Speaker Mattiello, the Senate President and General Assembly members, the funding was approved and implemented. Today, Rhode Island has a state-of-the-art facility that supports the state’s manufacturers with a pipeline of talent with the skills needed to enter the manufacturing sector and secure good paying jobs. Speaker Mattiello has visited the center and showed his support first-hand to the students and teachers.

Speaker Mattiello created the Career and Technical Education (CTE) board of trustees that established a unique partnership between the Department of Education and the private sector to create career paths critical to support our industry. Thanks to the Speaker’s vision, the CTE program went from 3,000 students in a typical year to over 14,000 students today – providing a career path for these students to secure high wage, in-demand jobs.

Representative Mattiello has kept his promises. He continues to support the end of the car tax – a commitment he made and has followed through on. The Speaker continues to be the voice of reason in the General Assembly and listens to a diverse group of individuals.

This pandemic has shown the need for the state to save more in our “Rainy Day Fund.” The Speaker has introduced legislation to increase this fund, recognizing that we cannot continue to spend. He understands a strong economy is critical to provide the programs needed to support our state and the importance of having strong manufacturing sector as the foundation for our economy. We are grateful for the Speaker’s leadership and everything he has done for our industry.

We urge the voters of District 15 in Cranston to support Representative Mattiello – he leads by example and continues to do what is in the best interest of all Rhode Islanders.
