Cousineau takes first at Coast Guard Invitational

FROM STAFF REPORTS Senior Shayna Cousineau (Cranston, R.I.) finished first in the 10,000m (40:12.83) as the Rhode Island College women’s outdoor track and field team opened the 2021 season at the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday afternoon. 

Rhode Island College finished third (three teams) with a team score of 9.0. Coast Guard finished first (115.0) and Southern Maine took second (51.0). 

Senior Jamie Dobson (Bradford, R.I.) finished third in both the hammer (41.95m) and the javelin (29.72m). 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at Eastern Connecticut on Friday, April 23 (2 p.m.). 

Junior Matt Thibaudeau (Lincoln, R.I.) finished first in the hammer (53.57m) as the Rhode Island College men’s outdoor track and field team opened the 2021 season at the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday afternoon. 

Rhode Island College finished third (three teams) with a team score of 18.0. Coast Guard finished first (80.0) and Southern Maine took second (76.0). 

Thibaudeau also finished second in the shot (11.52m) and the discus (36.80m). 

Freshman Michelson Salomon (Providence, R.I.) finished second in the hammer (48.00m) and sixth in both the shot (8.85m) and the discus (31.58m) 

Sophomore Austin Michael (Swansea, Mass.) finished eighth in the 800m (2:10.22). 

Senior Raffaelo Manzo (Slatersville, R.I.) finished second in the 10,000m (34:02.66). Junior Matt Russom (Fort Kent, N.Y.) finished fourth in the 10,000m (38:46.20). 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at Eastern Connecticut on Friday, April 23 (2 p.m.).  Locals take LEC honors

Rhode Island College student-athletes received all four of the weekly Little East men’s soccer awards for their performance in the Anchormen’s, 1-0, win over Eastern Connecticut on April 3. 

Senior midfielder Sa-Leem Kamarah (North Providence, R.I.) was named the Little East Offensive Player of the Week. Kamarah netted the club’s lone goal, which proved to be the game-winner, vs. the Warriors. 

Senior defender James Petrella (Willington, Conn.) was named the Little East Defensive Player of the Week. Petrella led the defense, comprised of mostly freshmen, to hold Eastern Connecticut off the scoreboard, and keep all but six efforts off goal. 

Senior goalkeeper Charlie Tashjian (West Warwick, R.I.) was named the Little East Goalkeeper of the Week. He played the first half and made four saves to contribute to the team shutout. 

Freshman goalkeeper Andrew Silva (Cumberland, R.I.) was named the Little East Rookie of the Week. He played 40 minutes and made two saves to earn his first collegiate win and contribute to the shutout win. 

Head Coach John Mello’s team is currently 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Little East. 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East action at home vs. Castleton on Sunday, April 25 (2 p.m.).  RIC swimming shines

Eight members of the Rhode Island College women’s swimming team were named to the 2020 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Fall All-Academic Team. 

In order for a swimmer or diver to make the All-Academic Team, the student-athlete must have a semester GPA of 3.50 or higher. The following eight RIC student-athletes have made the 2021 NEISDA Fall All-Academic team: 

Freshman Rebecca Fyrer (Cranston, R.I.), freshman Meghan Laflamme (Smithfield, R.I.), freshman Marta Matzko (Rumford, R.I.), sophomore Mary McBride (Rumford, R.I.), freshman Allison Picchioni (Cumberland, R.I.), freshman Hannah Rocha (Cranston, R.I.), freshman Marie Sinyan (North Providence, R.I.) and freshman Anna Vygoder (Lincoln, R.I.).
