RIIL gives update on fall season

The Rhode Island Interscholastic League put out a statement on Monday addressing where it stands during the COVID-19 crisis, and its preparation for the upcoming fall sport season.

As of now, things are slated to kick off in the third week of August, with regular season games beginning shortly after.

“These are certainly unprecedented times and we are all going through very difficult circumstances. Now that the 2019-20 school year has come to an end, our member schools have quickly turned their attention to the 2020-21 school year and the difficult but necessary task of returning students to school and learning in the fall. As an interscholastic school-based athletic organization, the RIIL and the Principals Committee on Athletics provides leadership, rules governance, education and support to help our member schools administer the athletic programs they choose to provide. Our member schools recognize the physical, social, education and mental health benefits that high school sports participation provides to more than 36,000 student-athletes that compete in our league annually,” the statement began.

The league admitted that the landscape may look a bit different, but it will continue to seek ways to ensure sports will return this fall and in a safe environment.

“With that in mind, the RIIL has been continuously working in conjunction with the Governor's Task Force, the Rhode Island Department of Health and Education, the National Federation of state high school Associations, Superintendents, Principles, Athletic Directors, and other state leaders to plan and prepare for a return to High school sports when it is safe and appropriate within a school environment,” said the league. “Although we cannot speculate as to exactly what high school sports will look like it is our intent to support our members schools and providing each student athlete the opportunity to participate in each of their chosen sports during the upcoming school year. The reality is that there will be many challenges and obstacles to overcome so we will need to be as flexible and creative as possible to be successful.”
