Robert Bitgood was awarded the Silver Beaver Award by the Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America at its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner on January, 25.
The Silver Beaver Award is the most prestigious award presented to volunteers who contribute significant leadership and commitment to their Scouts and community. The annual awards dinner was hosted by the Narragansett Council at Whites of Westport in Westport Massachusetts.
Bitgood, of Cranston, currently serves as Scoutmaster for all-female Troop 13 Cranston and Committee Member and Advancement Chair for Troop 22 Cranston. He started his Scouting career in Troop 1 Wakefield, achieved Scouting’s highest rank of Eagle Scout, and went on to earn the Gold Palm, an award for Scouts who earn 5 additional Merit Badges after earning their Eagle rank. Bitgood has spent 20 years as a volunteer leader for Scouts, he has served as both the Northwest District and Unit Commissioner. In these leadership roles, he has consistently gone the extra mile for his Scouts and fellow leaders. During Northwest Distinct trainings, Bitgood takes the time to break down the “ins and outs” as well as the “do’s and don’ts’” of Scouting to benefit those along their path to success. Professionally, Bitgood works in IT and leverages skills both learned and mastered during his tenure in the Scouting program.
“The Narragansett Council is made up of more than just Scouts and Troop leaders,” said Tim McCandless, Scout Executive and CEO. “Volunteers like the Silver Beaver Award recipients are those who make a difference and continue to embody what Scouting is all about. We’re incredibly grateful for Robert’s dedication to Scouting.”
