The Cranston West boys swim team made history at Roger Williams when it claimed the Division III Championship, which was its first title as a program in 50 years.

The Falcons finished the day with a team score of 379.50, edging Mt. Hope, who finished with 369 points.

Alexander Tremblay led West by winning the 200 and 500 yard freestyles, while Charles Maguire won the 50 yard freestyle.

West’s relay team of Tremblay, Trenton Kiernan, Maguire and Christopher Harvey placed second in the 200 yard medley relay. Kiernan later took second in the butterfly.

West’s relay team of Harvey, Adam Jackvony, Joseph Iannitti and Vincenzo Paliotta placed second in the 200 free relay. Tremblay, Kiernan, Iannitti and Maguire combined to later finish second in the 400 free relay.

The team will next be in action this Saturday at the state championships at Brown University.

BOYS HOCKEY

Cranston 6, Lincoln 1

The Cranston boys hockey co-op cruised to a 6-1 victory over visiting Lincoln on Monday night in the Division II play-in game.

The Falcons were led by captain Justin Drohen, who had a multi-goal night to pace the Cranston offense. Grant Bailey also found the back of the net. The Lions would grab an early 1-0 lead in the first period, but the Falcons would watch fire and score six unanswered.

The Falcons will take on top-seeded Ponaganset on the road this Friday night.

Paquette shines in RIC loss

Junior guard Deyshawn Tengbeh (East Providence, R.I.) scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Rhode Island College men’s basketball team saw their season come to an end in an 83-68 loss at No. 11 Keene State in the semifinals of the 2024 Little East Championship at Spaulding Gymnasium on Thursday night.

A couple of three-pointers by freshman guard Mike Paquette (Cranston, R.I.) helped lead the fifth-seeded Anchormen to an early, 19-11, lead with 12:20 left in the first half.

The top-seeded Owls would embark on a 20-5 run over an 8:07 time span to rack up a 41-32 lead at halftime.

A three-point shot from KSC junior guard Octavio Brito (Lincoln, R.I.) gave the Owls a 17-point lead, 57-40, with 12:45 remaining in the contest.

The Anchormen would try their best to close the gap, climbing within 11 points, 74-63, with 2:24 left tin the game, but would get no closer as the Owls advanced to the tourney finals.

Senior forward Ousmane Kourouma (Woonsocket, R.I.) scored 10 points and secured 19 rebounds for his 19th double-double of the season.

Sophomore guard Isaiah Dahl (Cornelius, Ore.) with finished 11 points.

Oliver, Sainristil shine at MIT

Sophomore Haley Oliver (Coventry, R.I.) set a new program record in the mile (5:07.26), surpassing her own previous personal best, the Rhode Island College women’s track and field team competed at the NCAA Div. III New England Championship, held at The Track at New Balance on Sunday afternoon.

Oliver finished 12th in the mile.

Junior Samantha Sainristil (Cranston, R.I.) finished 30th in the weight throw (12.19m).

In upcoming action, RIC will compete at the 2024 NEICAAA Championship, at New Balance on Friday and Saturday, March 1-2.
