Appeal to Congress

Michael F. Sabitoni, president of the Rhode Island Building & Construction Trades Council, flanked by Gov. Dan McKee, Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Peter Alviti Jr. and union construction workers, gathered last Thursday on Knight Street in Warwick near the reconstruction of the Pontiac Bridge over the Pawtuxet River on Route 5 to call on Congress to support the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package that passed the U.S. Senate.

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework is a historic investment into our economy, including billions repairing roads and bridges, making our transportation infrastructure more resilient, while creating hundreds of thousands of good family-supporting construction jobs and construction careers over the next decade,” Sabitoni said in a statement.

As for reconstruction of the Pontiac Bridge, Charles St. Martin, spokesman for the DOT, said the eastbound lane would be completed this fall. The plan calls for all four lanes of the bridge to be open throughout the holiday season. In early 2022, reconstruction of the westbound lane – again limiting the bridge to two lanes – will begin, St. Martin said.
