On Sunday morning, approximately 200 walkers arrived in Garden City Center to participate in the Celebrate the Movement Walk-a-thon to benefit Special Olympics Rhode Island.

After a warm welcome from Mike Montecalvo of WPRI 12/Fox Providence, Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins, Staci Kolb from SORI and SORI CEO Dennis DeJesus, the walkers were ready.

The participants included athletes, family members, volunteers and friends. This was the second annual Celebrate the Movement event and the first time it was held in person due to COVID-19.

As of this week, more than $115,000 had been raised. Participants can continue to raise additional funds until Oct. 31.

SORI provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for more than 4,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. For more information, visit SpecialOlympicsri.org.
