Samantha Rosenfield placed 2nd in the Class Meet as the team won its second straight title. Rosenfield, a senior, competes in both indoor and outdoor track.
During the indoor track season, she took 4th in the state for the shot put event as well as breaking the school record for the weight throw, by throwing 37 feet and 6 inches.
The previous record was 36 feet. In the outdoor season, she placed 2nd in the division for discus throw and she took 1st place for shot put. Her most recent accomplishment came this past Sunday, where she took 2nd in shot put, breaking her own personal record, and 3rd in discus at the Class A championships.
Additionally, because of her excellent performance in the hammer throw event, she has qualified to compete at the New Balance national meet this coming June. To qualify for nationals for hammer throw, an athlete needs to be able to throw 115 feet, which Rosenfield exceeded, throwing 134 feet.
These accomplishments don’t just come overnight; they come with hard work and determination. Rosenfield states how lifting and repetition were her primary forms of training, “In the later part of the season, I've focused my workouts to high weight, low reps, and countless explosive movements. For me, these types of workouts have proven to be essential in order for me to peak in the competitive meets. As far as practice goes, I am constantly reviewing my throws and focusing on one problem to fix at a time.”
She also credits the mental aspect which helped her during the season. She states how it is extremely important to have a good mindset and to “know that one awful day of throws does not reflect a whole season.”
As an athlete, it is important to have coaches that train you to have success in your sport. Rosenfield credits her trainer, Matt Ellis and the throwing coach for Cranston West, Jen Iozzi. She describes how both Ellis and Iozzi helped her to succeed in the sport. Ellis was the one that introduced
Rosenfield to throwing and helped her get stronger and Iozzi has been a big supporter for her and has knowledge and interest in coaching the team, which she feels “has helped immensely this season.” Rosenfield plans to continue competing at Bryant University, a university that is Division 1 for track and field.
