FROM STAFF REPORTS Cranston native Abbi Sampson took charge in the University of Rhode Island women’s hockey team’s game against Minnesota, where the clubs battled to an 8-8 tie.

Tied 2-2 heading into the third period, each team would score four goals to force the overtime period, which would then be played out without a game-winner.

Sampson scored three goals for URI, including the game-tying shot with less than a minute remaining to force overtime. Her other goals each came in the second period. Sampson also recorded an assist in the tie.

URI will be back in action when it hosts UMass on Feb. 25 for a 7 p.m. puck drop. The tie put its record at 6-10-1-1 on the season.
