Scout, 15, seeks wings through garden boxes for charity

15-year-old Scout Justin Fowler is well on his way to the highest rank in Scouting America, eagle. Earlier this week, he completed his eagle project as part of his journey to reaching that rank. He says only about 3.5% of Scouts achieve that rank.

Fowler decided to build garden boxes for Refocus Inc., a nonprofit agency that serves adults with physical and developmental needs. He got the idea after his mother, who has worked at Refocus Inc. for about 10 years, reached out to the company on his behalf, looking for ideas for his eagle project.

The company mentioned its garden, which had some beds that needed replacement. Fowler said he could replace four of them, and after getting approved for the project from his troop – Troop 4 Gaspee in Warwick – he started.

The project was split between three weekends. The first week, he mocked up the garden boxes. Then he stained all the wood the next weekend, with help from troop members and family – his brother, who achieved Eagle rank, also came back to help.

On Sunday, the garden boxes were installed.

"My project is a wonderful service that benefitted Refocus in many ways,” Fowler said. “My project doesn't benefit me, it's to benefit the community and benefit other people. It’s a lot of fun doing an eagle project and [a lot of] stress but the end result is worth everything."

Fowler said he will most likely be eagle rank by June or July, but he has to complete some paperwork and finish some merit badges first. But after that is done, he says, there will be a ceremony and he will be awarded his badge.
