DOG GONE
* * *
(Family Film)

I grew up with Timmy and “Lassie Come Home.”

“Dog Gone” requires the same handkerchief.

Rob Lowe plays a successful businessman who can’t understand why his son doesn’t know what he wants to do when he graduates from Harvard.

Fielding is a good kid, but his judgmental father has caused him to have no confidence in himself and consider himself a failure.

His only friend is Gonker, a pound dog with whom he shares a deep love for.

Hiking in the trails of rural Virginia, Gonker chases a fox and gets lost.

Fielding is devastated. He can’t sleep. He can’t eat.

Dad takes time off work and hikes the Appalachian Trail with son. To make matters worse, the two aren’t communicating. To make them worse still, the dog has to have a shot or he’ll die.

Mom organizes Mission Control at home, dad and son hand out flyers, the press gets involved, and soon the entire country is looking for Gonker.

Do they find him in time?

Do dad and son reconcile?

Did Lassie come home?

WOMEN TALKING
* * * ½

  1. Do nothing.
  2. Stay and fight.
  3. Leave

These are the three options that a group of physically and mentally abused women living in a religious colony with controlling men have before them.

Meeting in the darkness of the night, they talk about their condition and the options they have.

They, and their young children, have been beaten and raped. Females are denied education and can neither read nor write.

Only one male is on their side, a young teacher who has left the colony and returned to teach the male children.

While the movie is what it says – Women Talking – it is intense and highly dramatic, as options are discussed and frequently emotions take over logic.

“Women Talking” is like no movie you have seen before, raising many issues about situations woman faced “back then” and still face today.
