Shannon Corey brings ‘A Swingin’ Christmas’ to the Music Mansion

Posted

The holiday season is in full swing which means along with gift shopping for friends & loved ones, family gatherings and cold weather, there are plenty of festive events happening. It’s an ideal way to ring in some yuletide cheer while enjoying a night out and there’s a prime opportunity to do so on December 17. This particular extravaganza is being referred to as “A Swingin’ Christmas” and it’s taking place at the Music Mansion on 88 Meeting Street in Providence. It’s being hosted by Cranston native and pianist & vocalist Shannon Corey with the one-of-a-kind show starting at 7pm. It’s also a family friendly time with a few friends of Corey’s joining her on stage to play some songs off of her 2020 holiday album “I Wish I Had A River” along with some surprise tunes.

One could say that this show has been a few years in the making with Corey coming up with the idea for it during the pre-pandemic times. She’s very excited to make it a reality while aiming to have it happen on a yearly basis.

“This show has become something I really look forward to putting together every year,” Corey says about “A Swingin’ Christmas”. I started in 2019 thinking it could become an annual thing and when COVID hit I decided to safely record an album in place of a live show. In 2021, we streamed live from the Music Mansion and here we are in 2022 with a holiday album and a show that’s almost 50% sold out. I wanted to make this concert something festive that people can look forward to every year. A place for everyone to gather, see familiar faces, hear new arrangements of songs, and possibly sing along to traditional versions of tunes they are used to.  My hope is that people leave feeling refreshed and hopeful for a beautiful holiday season.”

Joining Corey on stage will be Joe Parillo on the keys, Greg Loughman on bass, Luca Simeone on trumpet and her husband Mike Maven guitar, ukulele and vocals. Maven has also been part of the evolution of the show and he particularly enjoys how it sets itself apart from other holiday events in the area.

“I started helping Shannon produce this show 4 years ago, and every year has been different,” he says about the show. “During COVID, it became a holiday album recorded in a studio with all the musicians quarantined in different rooms. Last year, we decided to live stream it as well as host it in person, and had people from literally all over the world tuning in. There’s really nothing else like this happening in Rhode Island around the holidays, and it’s something I look forward to doing every year now.”

For anyone who likes Christmas music, some jazzy tunes and an overall fun atmosphere, “A Swingin’ Christmas” is definitely worth checking out. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door and kids under the age of 10 will only be charged $10. To purchase said tickets, log on to Corey’s website at shannoncoreymusic.com.
