Shannon View Inn for great corned beef

When the Bishop told my Catholic friends they couldn’t eat corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day, I decided to abstain with them and observe the sacrifice of eating fish on Friday.

The lobster roll I had at Blount’s to replace the traditional Irish fare was delicious. A week later I was still craving a corned beef sandwich. I knew where I could get one, so Joyce and I hopped in the car and headed for the Shannon View Inn.

You can’t miss it. At 1901 Post Rd., the loudly painted yellow building sits directly across from the airport. Walking through the front door, you instantly know you are in an Irish pub. The huge bar dominates the room, with beer mugs hanging overhead and wooden tables lining the walls, which are covered with beer ads, announcements of Trivia Night and signs advertising 35 cent wings on Mondays.

Five TVs are turned to five different channels, men are shouting across the round bar, parties are drinking local beers, and there is a large group in the tent attached to the building having a party.

We perused the large menu, which included specialty burgers, salads, wraps, sandwiches, appetizers and meals, many with an Irish twist.

Options like shepard’s pie ($14), chorizo meatloaf ($14), Shannon’s poutine ($12) and an Irish spring roll ($12), made with corned beef and sauerkraut, were all present on the menu and adding to the Irish atmosphere.

Joyce went for the Reuben, rye bread stuffed with tender corned beef, sauerkraut, and special sauce ($15), while I chose the corned beef on marbled rye with spicy brown mustard ($13). Joyce also decided to try the house chips, while I enjoyed a huge dish of the chef’s creamy coleslaw as my side.

I was impressed to see you can also order a Cape Cod Reuben, with haddock, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese on rye ($15). I wouldn’t be surprised if they served a ton of them on St. Patrick’s Day.

Shannon View also does take-out and deliveries. Call 732-0999. Open daily at noon.
