Shocked by police response

To The Editor,

I am appalled at Major Patalano’s responses to the concerned members of the community from your most recent piece on the matter, “Residents continue speaking out against Cranston’s Police Academy Training Complex.” In his responses, Patalano states that he provides the community a schedule “as a courtesy.” This egregious barrage of gunshots during the use of the range calls for a more monitored schedule as a standard, not as a courtesy.

Secondly, I was shocked again to see Major Patalano’s response to medical professionals weighing in on the adverse impacts of being subjected to hearing these gunshots. In his response, he states “there is no evidence to suggest the alleged effects that were raised” by Dr. Ricci and “was suspicious” of the medical experts that the community brought in. What medical qualifications does Major Patalano possess? I would love to know how he derived that result and what research he conducted to conclude that there is no evidence to support the adverse effects of hearing gunfire throughout the day in one’s home. In fact, his bio on the Cranston Police’s website, only states he has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Administration of Justice, with no mention of any expertise in the Psychological or Mental health field.

This issue of incessant gunfire plaguing the community of Western Cranston is a clear failure of the City and Police Department to keep the mental and physical well-being of the community as its first priority.
