Staying Healthy: MAKO robot revolutionizing joint replacement surgery

Living with arthritis, hip or knee pain is unnecessary in today’s day and age of medical advancements. Whether you’re a young person with a sports injury, or 65 years old or older, and have been experiencing pain and discomfort walking, or doing some of the things you love, such as gardening, golfing, jogging, playing tennis, or chasing the grandkids around, you shouldn’t let joint pain stand in the way of your quality of life.

Kent Hospital now has one of only two MAKO robots in the state of Rhode Island, and it is revolutionizing how surgeons are performing total joint replacement surgery, allowing patients to stay healthier, longer.

For those unfamiliar with it, the MAKO robot serves as an assistant to orthopedic surgeons who are looking to achieve unmatched precision in total joint, hip, and knee procedures. In the operating room, as the Executive Chief of Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine, Care New England, I am able to use the robot’s capabilities to use a 3D model of the patients’ joint to take a more in-depth and accurate look into the joint when planning for the operation. During the surgery, I am also able to use the robotic arm to better position the implant as well as remove diseased bone and cartilage within a pre-defined area, allowing for greater precision and comfort for the patient.

Patients should know that having a MAKO surgery is efficient and recovery time is quicker, due to the precise nature of the surgery. Having a surgery using the MAKO robot makes for the most predictably successful surgery one can receive. This translates into better success for patients, which is my ultimate goal as a surgeon.

If you or a loved one not living up to their potential because of arthritis, knee or hip pain, they should visit Kent Hospital to ask for a consultation to learn more about how the MAKO robot can enhance their mobility, so they can once again, live life to the fullest.

Robert M. Shalvoy, MD, is Executive Chief of Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine for Care New England.
