Psychedelic music has way more bandwidth than it gets credit for. The style can be weaved into numerous others, whether it’s pop, blues, folk, hip hop, funk or anything else. This type of inclusion expands the overall sound while letting a variety of sonic elements mingle together in harmonious fashion. One band that embraces this aesthetic in a jam band format is Sunset Creatures, who are based in Providence. The latest edition of this artistic approach is their debut LP “Night Noises”, which they self-released back on May 5.

The new full-length took three years to make with multi-instrumentalist and lead vocalist Isaac Morin handling the recording and mixing with Chris Rice, who also played a variety of instruments during the recording sessions. With the rest of the band including fellow multi-instrumentalist Dave Ariel, guitarist Kyle Baroud and drummer Liam Shaw, there’s a lot going on in terms of arrangements and structure. This is all added upon with multi-instrumentalist Ryan Jandrow and guitarist Casey Pomes serving as outside collaborators. Along with the usual drums, bass and guitar, there’s keyboards, piano, banjo, organ, synthesizer and various horns & string instruments being brought into the fold as well. This is even more impressive when the cohesivity of the music becomes apparent while listening.

Kicking the album off with a groovy riff, “Desert Heat” has harmonic vocals being relayed along with some kickass guitar solos. “Money Hungry Fools” is a bit more bluesy while resonating a major Allman Brothers vibe, especially with how the volume gets increased during the chorus. Running past the 10 minute mark, the longest track off of “Night Noises” is “Weakday Blues”. Hypnotic piano keys conclude the song in epic, but also haunting, fashion with the entirety bringing a lot to the forefront. The other tunes that can’t be overlooked are “The Rundown”, “Love Crook”, “Railroad Runner” and “Wintertime”.

While Sunset Creatures currently call Providence home, they originally started out in Milford, Massachusetts. Bands and musicians from other areas of Southern New England moving to “The Creative Capital’ and the surrounding cities & towns, like Cranston and Warwick, has been a thing happening for the past few years. You can’t really blame them with the culture here being ideal for artistic types along with the lower cost of living compared to other places in the region. Anyways, you should welcome these guys into the area by giving their debut album a listen. The best way to do that is by logging on to their Bandcamp page at sunsetcreatures.bandcamp.com and pressing play.
